L'un des paradoxes du retour de l'émigré est que celui qui rentre n'est plus le même que celui qui est parti, et qu'il rentre dans un pays qui lui-même a changé entre-temps. Cette altérité dit bien, au-delà des images idylliques, que le retour n'est pas simple. L'odyssée d'Homère en est un paradigme, dont les motifs furent repris sous différentes formes et à travers les oeuvres les plus diverses, au cours des âges dans la littérature occidentale. L'analyse est ici menée sous une double perspective : d'une part, une réflexion sur l'écriture et la fiction du retour travaillant les textes littéraires et, d'autre part, une réflexion sociohistorique sur la durée. Se nourrissant mutuellement en une approche sociopoétique, ces deux perspectives ont permis de dégager des pistes et des outils pour sonder l'hiatus entre |les deux rives| : l'hier et l'aujourd'hui, l'ici et le là-bas, le rêve et la réalité, l'espoir et la désespérance. Car le |retour total| n'est pas permis à l'homme, et le |revenant| attend une improbable réparation, une illusoire fusion. Ce regard étranger et étrange sur le pays, qui désormais est autre, offre à l'historien un terreau fertile : le retour est éclairant en ce qu'il convoque et confronte l'histoire et la mémoire.
