Stress in Health and Disease, An Issue of Psychiatric Clinics of North America, PDF Free

Stress in Health and Disease, An Issue of Psychiatric Clinics of North America, PDF
By:Daniel L. Kirsch
Published on 2014-12-27 by Elsevier Health Sciences

Stress in the DSM is referred to only in the sense of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, some research studies estimate up to two thirds of illnesses seen by general practitioners are ‘stress related’–GI problems, sleep disturbance, mental concentration, headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, dermatitis, illnesses from lowered immune system, and vague aches and pains – all can be symptoms and outcomes of the elusive stress factor. This issue of Psychiatric Clinics of North America discusses the scientific medical facets of stress, written by mental health and medical practitioners. It looks at the brain-body connection of stress – what the body does to result in stress and varying results stress has on the body. This fascinating cross-discipline look at stress is intended for psychiatrists, general practitioners, cardiologists, GI specialists, neurologists, sleep medicine specialists, respiratory specialists, and others who diagnose and treat patients with stress suspected as part of the illness equation or with self-reported stress. Topics include: Measurement of stress; Anxiety and stress-how they work together; Relationship between genetics and stress; Role of glia in stress; Sleep and stress; Diet and stress; Supplements and stress; Effect of severe stress on early brain development, attachment, and emotions; Role of stress and fear on the development of psychopathology; Expressions of stress in psychiatric illness; Dermatologic manifestations of stress in normal and psychiatric populations; Humor and the psychological buffers of stress; Stress expression in children and adolescents; Stress in service members; Stress in the geriatric population.

Published on 1996-12-11 by National Academies Press

America's health care system is being reshaped by a variety of market-driven changes, and states are emerging as the major governmental influence on health care policy. Amid these changes, the health and well-being of children can slip from view. Although most children are fundamentally healthy, they require health care that emphasizes preventive services, such as immunizations and regular monitoring of physical and psychosocial growth and development. This volume takes a broad look at access and quality of care for pregnant women, children, and mothers. Among the issues addressed are the scope of benefits available under various health care reform efforts and services for special-needs children under managed care.

By:Yuri Quintana,Aubrey Van Kirk Villalobos,Dorothy May
Published on 2012 by IOS Press

Over half the deaths from disease in the world are now due to just four chronic conditions u diabetes, lung diseases, some cancers and heart disease. Health and education are inextricably linked. Developing and delivering effective, scalable and sustainable education programs which lead to real behavioral change would influence some of the common risk factors for these diseases, such as smoking, poor diet and lack of physical activity. This book contains the selected papers from the St. Jude Cure4Kids Global Summit, held in June, 2011 at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. The aim of this three-day conference was to improve health and science education in classrooms and communities around the world. Leading educators, innovators and pioneers in the field of public health came together in a multidisciplinary forum to explore examples of successful education programs, analyze the challenges in designing effective, scalable and cost-efficient public health education programs and identify strategies, methodologies and incentives for developing future programs capable of yielding large-scale improvements in health outcomes for diverse communities. The papers presented here provide a foundation in the key topics necessary to create future innovative health promotion programs, and will be of interest to all those whose work involves improving health outcomes by means of better and more effective health education.

Intelligent Testing with the WISC-III PDF Free

Intelligent Testing with the WISC-III PDF
By:Alan S. Kaufman
Published on 1994-08-23 by John Wiley & Sons Incorporated

Alan S. Kaufman has been on the cutting edge of intelligence testing for more than twenty-five years. Not least among his many important contributions to the field during that time has been his groundbreaking Intelligent Testing with the WISC-R, the book that taught an entire generation of psychologists and educators internationally how to interpret and make intelligent use of Wechsler's intelligence scales. Now from the man whose name has become synonymous worldwide with the intelligent use of intelligence testing, here is the definitive guide to Intelligent Testing with the WISC-III. Revised and updated to reflect not only crucial changes to the WISC-R, but also the latest research findings on intelligence testing and its real-world applications, this book provides examiners with a rational, step-by-step approach to organizing and making sense of the barrage of numbers derived from the WISC-III's many subtests and factor indexes. Children and Addiction PDF
By:Gennaro Ottomanelli
Published on 1995 by Greenwood Publishing Group

Despite the fear surrounding the issue of drug use by our children, there is little information to guide those interested in providing help to children vulnerable to substance abuse. Children and Addiction addresses the needs of counselors, teachers, parents, and other concerned parties by describing the influence of habit formation, opportunity, access, predisposition, family relationships, the educational environment, and interpersonal communication as precursors to the addictive process. The effects of addiction and its impact upon the individual, family, school, and society are discussed in detail. Additional information is provided on types of drugs, treatment, relapse, self-help groups, and the recovery process. Interspersed throughout the text are descriptive case histories to assist the reader in their understanding of the process of addiction.
