Mais loin de lui l’intention de prôner le puritanisme et la chasteté. Dans ce livre, avec la verve et l’érudition d’un grand polémiste, il s’agit seulement de réapprendre à distinguer ce qu’en ces années confuses, on se prend à confondre. « Préfacier de la Vita Sexualis, ajoute Etiemble, j’écrivais jadis : ce n’est point en accumulant les mots sanieux et les situations repoussantes qu’on obtient les œuvres les plus fortes concernant la vie charnelle. Aujourd’hui je persiste et me contresigne. Car la pornographie c’est notamment le contraire de l’érotisme qu’il ne faut pas, lui, condamner à la légère. » Qui donc, après avoir lu Etiemble, s’y risquerait encore ? La pornographie remise à sa place, l’érotisme passionnément célébré, comme il le fut dans l’histoire, d’une civilisation à l’autre, on verra comment l’auteur de Blason d’un corps en arrive à parler, d’une voix changée, d’un sujet « malaisé entre tous » : l’amour.

Nouvel avatar du grand courant universel de révolte contre la condition humaine, contre son impureté, courant qui s'exprime depuis le début des âges à travers les gnostiques et les puritains, l'attaque de Sartre, procédant d'une nostalgie d'absolu qu'elle laisse souvent transparaître, ne serait que défense et refuge contre sa propre tentation. En s'appuyant sur cette contradiction, en suivant l'évolution de l'écrivain à travers ses personnages, Suzanne Lilar en vient à découvrir un Sartre inconnu, secret, hanté par cela même qu'il s'est longtemps ingénié à bafouer. Ce n'est pas la moindre originalité de cet ouvrage de nous montrer un Sartre tenté par l'érotique toujours ici opposée à l'érotisme. Et ce n'est pas son moindre mérite, à l'encontre des philosophes du non et du désespoir, de plaider en faveur d'une philosophie du oui et du salut. Plaidoyer où le lecteur, en même temps qu'il admirera la rigueur et la subtilité de l'analyse critique, retrouvera la générosité et la ferveur qui animaient les pages du Couple.
